Hui - New York
About This Spot
Stepping into Hui feels like discovering a quietly confident corner of Szechuan flavor nestled in the heart of the Upper East Side. The pace here leans toward relaxed, offering a warm, unpretentious setting where the focus is on genuine cooking and approachable hospitality rather than theatrical presentation. It’s a space where the hum of conversation mingles with clinking plates, setting the scene for a meal meant to be savored without rush.
The atmosphere strikes a balance between intimate and lively—comfortably modern yet unassuming, encouraging diners to settle in and explore the layers of flavor that define Szechuan cuisine. There’s an honest warmth in the way the kitchen crafts dishes that feel both familiar and nuanced, embracing tradition while allowing room for personal touches and subtle spice calibrations.
Eating at Hui is an invitation to engage with food that speaks through texture and spice rather than fanfare. Imagine sharing crispy scallion pancakes or pan-fried pork buns that introduce you to the rhythm of the meal, before moving on to vibrant, boldly seasoned dry pot offerings that come alive with aroma and depth. Here, each dish holds space for spirited conversation—rich bean noodles slicked in chili oil, or tender slices of pork belly balanced with cooling cucumber and sweet chili—a delicious dialogue between heat and harmony.
For those who appreciate attentive service that feels intuitively helpful rather than intrusive, Hui provides a quietly confident hospitality. The team listens and adapts to the moment; whether guiding spice levels or suggesting something a little less traveled on the menu, they create an easygoing yet attentive experience. This thoughtful approach makes Hui an inviting neighborhood spot that encourages return visits, whether you're seeking a dinner out or a welcoming place to gather with friends over dim sum and shared plates.
In all, Hui offers a quietly joyful exploration of Szechuan cuisine—unpretentious, flavorful, and grounded in an authentic appreciation for the nuances that make each dish a small celebration of culinary craft.

Hui is one of my favourite Szechuan restaurants. Consistently excellent food in an unpretentious setting. What's not to love? Try their dry hot pot, stir fried green beans or potatoes!

Delicious food with a very pleasant dining space and wonderfully inviting service. We got the Pork Belly, Fried Cumin Beef, and amazing Fish Fillet Boil in Chili. They were able to tone down the spiciness for my friends, but still kept it delicious. Will definitely come back more often.

I came here for lunch but ordered from the chef’s special since the lunch specials featured cliche westernized Chinese food and I was looking for more traditional sichuan cuisine. I ordered the boiled fish and it was mostly okay, and the soup dumplings were a bit too chewy compared to the great ones I’ve had in the past. Overall, decent spot if you’re nearby

Wow the food here is so good! This was my first dry pot (fish), and the taste was so sophisticated, -- I ordered it very mildly spicy, and the combination of the slight heat and the slight sweetness, it was just amazing. Somebody in my party can only eat bland food with no sauce or spices - this is not the restaurant for that so they only ate white rice. The service was great, available but gave us a lot of space, never pushed us to order, just so nice. The place is small to medium and very clean. They have soda although it's not on the menu. Highly recommend for authentic Chinese food!

OK, so we haven’t actually eaten at the restaurant yet. But we’ve ordered from there multiple times when I have guests in town and the food is so good when the guests return, they want to order it again. It’s also so good that we order extra just to have leftovers the next day. Best Chinese ever!

I started coming here when I discovered this restaurant in February 2023. It has become my go to Chinese restaurant whenever I’m in New York , which is often. I’ve waited a year before writing a review. They have a very friendly staff who are welcoming and always smiling. I love the whole snapper and the fried rice is the best I’ve had in the city. They also have great cocktails , especially the lychee martini All cocktails are $14. Can’t beat that anywhere in the city. The room is cozy with soft jazz playing. I have only come for the lunch but I definitely recommend for the food, drinks and great service. On a side note, I’ve noticed most of the patrons are Asians. That is always a good sign that the food is authentic. I read a review where the writer said she was hassled for a tip. I have been to the restaurant easily ten times in the last year and NEVER have been disappointed.

I order here all the time and dine in occasionally. Everything is great - if you're a fan of spicy, the spicy dishes deliver perfectly. Go for the main dishes over the dim sum, but either way you won't be mad.

Decent neighborhood Chinese restaurant. Nice atmosphere and friendly service. It is authentic but not the best I’ve had. We started with a lackluster Dan Dan mien - noodles were a bit overcooked. But it improved from there - the beef with chili was nice and warming but the star of the evening for me was the pork belly and preserved vegetables - the fat from the pork adding wonderful flavor the vegetables.
